On day one the newly born kitten depends entirely on it’s mother, it cannot even control it’s body temperature on it’s own. Day ten: it’s brain is more & more capable of coordination of it’s members. Incredibly most kittens are capable of using the litter box after 18 days! At three weeks old it can stand up straight, see, ear and react to it’s environment. It’s at the tenth week that it acquires a perfect equilibrium. No kitten should be separated from it’s mother before it’s ready to go on it’s own which occurs on week seven.

So you have new kittens! Congratulations! Baby kittens are adorable and, if you decide to keep any of them, will being you years of fun and happiness!

Our cat gave us three kittens recently, and we’ve decided to keep them all. I’ve found that experience is the best teacher, so this article will give you tips on what to expect in the first four weeks after the birth of your kittens!

Immediately after their birth, they should begin to nurse and will stay close to the mother cat. Staying close to her ensures they are fed, safe and are kept warm as kittens are unable to retain body heat for the first few weeks. The mother cat should be nursing her kittens about 70% of the time for the first two to three weeks. If all is well, she won’t leave them often; she’ll leave to eat, take care of business and stretch. Continue to provide fresh water and food and keep it nearby. Kitten food is especially good for nursing mothers as it provide extra calories and nutrients that they will all need.

During this first week, it is acceptable to hold the kittens, but do so only for a short time. Allow them to become accustomed to your scent and to being around humans. The mother cat will be very protective of her kittens for several weeks, so a few minutes per day should be sufficient in establishing the kitten to human bond as well as getting them socialized.

During the second week expect more of the same. The kittens will still stay close to their mom, but when she is not around, they will sleep curled around each other for warmth and comfort. They will begin to move around some, but they are still deaf, blind and unable to walk. They will sleep most of the time. Their eyes will begin to open, but they will not be able to see well.

During the third week, their eyes should be almost fully open and will remain blue for another several weeks. They still remain deaf and with limited mobility. They won’t nurse as much, but neither will they do much else but eat and sleep, however, they will begin to take a few wobbly steps.

During the fourth week is when the fun begins! Their eyes will be fully open, they can hear and they are able to walk well, and possibly may be able to run a bit. They will begin to explore the area around them, and will be interested in playing with toys.

They will be playing with each other, and it will seem rough, but their play is instinct and important for them. They will appear to suck their paws, but this is a form of play, and it’s adorable! They will bite, swat, tumble over each other and explore much during this fourth week. You can take great delight in just watching them and interacting with them with play and toys.

Canned cat food may be offered during this week, though the kittens will likely not take an interest for several weeks yet. Their sole source of nutrition continues to be their mother for the first six to eight weeks.

During the first four weeks you will see tremendous growth and changes in your new kittens! From completely helpless, immobile, deaf and blind to able to see, hear, run, jump and play in just four short weeks is amazing and fun to watch! Have a great time getting to know your new kittens!

EYE INFECTIONS IN KITTENS

(CONJUNCTIVITIS NEONATORUM)

Conjunctivitis Neonatorum is an inflammatory condition of the conjunctiva, the white tissue lining the eyelids that occurs due to Herpes Virus infection in kittens. The virus enters the eye through the eyelids before they have opened. Prompt intervention prevents rupture of the cornea and permanent scarring of the eye. Treatment involves opening the eyes and applying appropriate medication.

EYELIDS AND DRY EYE

The eyelids serve many important functions. They protect the cornea, the clear outer portion of the eye, and the eye itself from trauma. They keep light out and determine the size and shape of the opening of the eye. The eyelids also produce and spread tears over the eye. Tears supply the cornea with oxygen and nutrients; therefore they are essential to keep the cornea healthy. If the cornea is deprived of oxygen and food because of a lack of tear film, destructive changes occur quickly, leading to a condition called Dry Eye. Dry Eye is also called Keratoconjunctivitis sicca. The cornea can become pigmented, scarred, and ulcerated. Partial vision loss can also result. The eyes of cats with Dry Eye burn and sting all the time just like ours do on a windy day. Diagnosis is made by a tear test that measures how many tears the eye produces in one minute. In this case, low levels of tear production are detected.

CAUSES OF DRY EYE

1. The eyelids of newborn kittens and puppies normally open between 10 and 14 days of age. If the eyelids open too early, tears are not yet produced. Dry Eye will result unless topical eye lubricants are applied three to four times daily until tear production begins.

2. Surgical correction of the lazy eyelid prevents further damage and rupture of the eye.

3. Certain breeds including Persians, Himalayans, Burmese, and Exotic Shorthairs have very large protruding eyes, which are subject to trauma, in addition, many also have an inherited eyelid disorder called Lagophthalmos. The “lazy eyelid” or lids do not close properly and therefore can not spread the tears adequately. This increases the risk of Dry Eye and secondary Corneal Ulcers.

4. Many of these same cats also have mild Entropion of their lower eyelids. Entropion is also an inherited condition in which the eyelid tissue turns inward. This causes further irritation to the eye.

5. Chronic Herpes Virus eye infections in cats can result in Dry Eye.

TREATMENT FOR DRY EYE

* The drug Pilocarpine and the anti-cancer drug Interferon effectively stimulate tear production in certain cats.

* A surgical procedure called a Parotid Duct Transposition (PDT) is a worthwhile consideration for cases that do not respond to medication.

* With consistent therapy, most cases of Dry Eye carry a good prognosis, but without treatment, recurrent corneal ulcers, bacterial infections, and even blindness can result.

INHERITED EYE PROBLEMS

1. ENTROPION

Entropion is a hereditary condition in which the eyelids roll inward which causes the eyelashes to contact the surface of the eye. This condition usually involves both eyes and is quite painful. In addition to conjunctivitis, partial or complete loss of vision can result if left untreated. Squinting and tearing are the most common signs. Persians and Himalayans seem to be at increased risk. Surgical correction involves removal of a narrow strip of skin and muscle from the eyelid. Stitches are then used to avert the eyelid so that it lies in a normal position.

2. EYELASH DISEASE

Eyelash Disease is a group of conditions in which eyelashes or hairs injure the eye.

* Trichiasis is a condition in which normal hairs lie on and irritate the eye. This is common in Persian cats. The facial hairs on the side of the eye nearest the nose can irritate the eyes and cause conjunctivitis. Prevention requires regular trimming of these hairs.

METHOD TO DETECT INHERITED EYE PROBLEMS

CERF EXAM

In addition to hereditary eyelid and eyelash diseases, several disorders of the cornea and retina are also inherited in cats. They can easily go undetected until quite advanced. CERF Exam is a method to detect Inherited Eye Problems. Most are quite painful and blindness is not an uncommon consequence. A Canine Eye Registration Foundation (CERF) examination is an eye exam that can only be performed by a certified veterinary eye specialist. It is used to detect inherited eye diseases in dogs and cats and can be given at a young age. Responsible breeders should not breed any dog or cat who fails a CERF Exam. Potential owners should ask whether or not the parents received and passed the CERF Exam. Neutering or spaying animals with these hereditary conditions insures that the problem will not be passed on to future generations.

Have you ever heard the expression, “Nip the problem in the bud?” Simply put, it means; “Stop the problem before it starts”. The same can be said for raising a problem free cat. Bad behaviors are usually learned as kittens and develop into larger problems as they grow up. When aggressive behavior such as biting and scratching is nipped in the bud, training kittens to become well-behaved cats is much easier.

Playful kittens can be so cute; it’s hard to see their biting and clawing as much of a threat. It hurts a little, but not that bad so why not let them bite, scratch, and play with your hands? The reason is simple, you do not want this behavior to continue when they develop sharp claws and teeth; That’s when it really does hurt!

Consider that cats in the wild learn to hunt through playful behavior when they are young. This natural tendency is carried over to domestic cats when they learn how to use their teeth and claws through playful behavior. Allowing a cute little kitten to bite and scratch your hands teaches them to use their hunting skills on you! The behavior continues as they develop into full-grown cats and before you know it, you have a cat with a major behavior problem.

Needless to say, you do not want your cat to bite people! Therefore, it is important to remember some rules for play when they are young. When your kitten bites it is not usually necessary to scold, however you should stop playing with them immediately. When your kitten bites or claws your hands, take a “time out”, and let them know that playtime is over.

Alternatively, you can divert a biting kittens attention from your hands by using a piece of string, yarn or some other cat toy. Distraction is a good way to keep playing with your kitten if you don’t want to take a time out. If they continue to go after your hands, scolding may be necessary.

The right type of human contact is essential to a domestic cats development. If your kitten learns that your hands are play toys at a young age, they will naturally revert back to this behavior as an adult cat. This is the last thing you want if you’re trying to raise a well-behaved cat! Training kittens not to bite is a must if you want to keep your cat from biting.

Wait! Don’t give up on your cat! A well planned behavior program may be all your kitty needs. Go here for simple tips to help you keep your feline inline!

Back in the ancient times, the cats are already around. They are even placed in elevated positions in civilizations like Egypt.

Today, any one can enjoy owning a cat. There are no restrictions at all in owning them, unlike other pets that require high maintenance and are subject to state or federal regulation.

A cat can also help you forget an exhausting day at work or at school. It can cuddle up to you and purr. It makes you feel protective over the cat.

Caring for a Cat

Any cat lover out there does not need any reason or question for owning one. Yet, for those who do not have a cat they may think that this is a tremendous task.

Actually, cats are the easiest pets to own. Cats are the perfect companions. They do not require much from the owner. They only have to be regularly fed. They also need a shelter.

Cats can be toilet trained too. A simple tray and a few training sessions can dispense with the problem of dealing with their dirt, especially for indoor cats.

Getting Your Own Cat

Having a cat in the household will definitely be an experience you do not want to miss. Again, they can be easily maintained in the household, so there is no need to worry.

All you have to do is to pick one type that will best suit your personality. There are a big number of cat breeds out there to choose from, not to mention those that have been cross-bred.

Each breed has its own distinct characteristic and personality. This can affect how they will behave, how they play and even if they will require further maintenance.

The best thing to do is to pick the best breed for you. Here are the top 10 breeds that you can choose from.

1. Persian Cat

The Persian cat is one of the most popular breeds in town. They are known for their long and fluffy hair that can grow up to 3 inches. They also have beautiful colors that range from white, black, gray, orange or a combination of these colors.

Persian cats require more maintenance in terms of their hair. They also need comfortable environments and they have to feel secured.

2. Siamese Cat

Siamese cats are also very popular. They have markings in their hair that make them very distinct. They also have slender bodies and very elegant posture.

A Siamese cat always wants to be the center of attention. They want to be cared for. They tend to get too noisy or cry a lot if they want to call your attention.

3. Maine Coon Cat

The Maine Coon Cat, or as some would say Mancoon cat, is one of the oldest breeds of cats. Everywhere in the world, there is one you will find as they can withstand warm and even cold climates.

One will be a very loyal addition to the family. They are fun-loving. Their good-natured personality will make them very safe with kids.

4. Ragdoll

Another wonderful breed for soon-to-be pet owners is the ragdoll. This cat has medium length of hair. They are very gentle, easy-going and affectionate.

They are perfect for any household. They only have to be kept indoors, away from the aggressive animals.

5. Burmese Cat

Burmese cats are shorthaired. They have big yellow eyes and very satiny hair. Stroking their hairs are enough for grooming.

Burmese cats tend to be vocal like the Siamese. They only have softer voices. They can get really bonded and trusting with their owners.

6. Manx

The Manx cats are very distinct because of their peculiar backs that end in a shortened tail. Their structure gives them a very rounded look that makes them more adorable and cuddly.

Manx cats are very intelligent and playful. They are even considered as social cats as they love people very much. They can even be playful even around water, making it easier to groom them.

7. Siberian Cat

Siberian cats are known for their proportioned bodies and their furs. Some even claim that their furs are hypoallergenic, although this is still subject to be confirmed.

These cats are intelligent, loyal and very affectionate. They are almost dog-like in their personality.

8. Somali Cat

Somali cats are long-haired cats that wee from the Abyssinian breed. They have fluffy hair and bottle-brush tails.

They are perfect for owners who want an active, intelligent and playful pet. They can also get very curious. They also shed little hair and thereby perfect for those who do not want too much grooming time.

9. Russian Blue

This breed of cat has blue to bluish-gray coat. They usually have green or dark eyes.

Russian Blues are very playful and intelligent. They also bond really well with their owners but they are very shy to strangers.

1. Always make time for your Ragdoll

Ragdoll Cats are notoriously sociable creatures and require a lot more attention than other breeds. It is important to make you spend time with your Ragdoll preferably every day. Without your interaction, they could quickly develop behavioural problems. You can give your cat the attention it needs by simply playing with them or grooming them.

2. Groom your Ragdoll at least once a week

Although Ragdoll Cat’s require less grooming than other long-haired cats, it is important to groom them at least once a week. Not only will your cat have a beautifully groomed coat but it will also prevent the chances of them getting hairballs.

3. Don’t let your Ragdoll outdoors alone

These cats should be either be kept indoors or be closely monitored if they are outdoors. Their gentle demeanour means that they will not defend themselves if attacked and they are at risk of contracting parasites.

4. Prevent scratching by covering the affected area with tin foil

Many cat breeders and owners have problems with their cats clawing furniture and other objects around the home. An easy way to stop this is by wrapping tin foil around the object. Cats do not like the texture of the foil and cease scratching it.

5. Make sure your Ragdoll has plenty of toys to play with

One of the most rewarding aspects of owning a Cat is watching it play (and even joining in!). Playing is an important part of maintaining a healthy lifestyle for your Ragdoll. Not only does it provide fantastic exercise but allows cat and owner to bond, so it is important that your Ragdoll has plenty of toys to play with. Toys can either be bought from a pet store or found around the house. Something as mundane as a cardboard box or a large bottle top can provide hours of entertainment.

During the mid nineteen hundreds, an American breeder developed a cat breed that was so laid back and relaxed that it would hang limply like a cloth doll when people held it. This breed was developed from a Birman cat and a longhair cat with an unknown ancestry. The breeder called these cats the Ragdoll because of their calm, relaxed nature. Although the Cat Fancier’s Association did not recognize these first cats as the Ragdoll, their descendants became the gentle Ragdolls we know today.

This breed is one of the largest of the cat breeds, weighing between ten and twenty pounds. It is no surprise that such heavy cats have big, muscular bodies. Their heads are slightly round, their ears are small and rounded, and their large eyes are in a brilliant blue color. This breed’s tail is slightly bushy and tapers at the end.

The Ragdoll does not come in a wide range of colors and patterns. In fact, there are actually only four colors accepted by the Cat Fancier’s Association, Seal, Chocolate, Blue, and Lilac. You can find these colors in pointed, mitted, or bicolor patterns, but some breeders avoid mitted cats because they look too much like the breed’s Birman ancestors.

The Ragdoll’s calm demeanor makes it the perfect choice for families. These cats are almost dog like in their behavior, greeting family members at the door, following them through the house, and snuggling down beside them on the sofa. If you do not believe in de-clawing your cat, but are concerned about having your furniture ruined, you may want to consider this breed as well. Some Ragdoll owners say their cats have learned to use a scratching post instead of furniture arms to sharpen their claws much more quickly than their other cat breeds. Since these cats seem to make an effort to keep from scratching people, as well, they may be less prone to scratch furniture in the first place.

While this cat breed does not need the company of other pets and seems to prefer to spend time with family members over cats, it does not mind living with other cats. Perhaps this is because this breed is so much larger than other cats, but it is most likely because the Ragdoll is just so sweet natured.

Since the Ragdoll is a longhair cat, some prospective cat owners are a bit hesitant about choosing this breed. They are afraid they won’t have time for the frequent grooming most longhairs require. However, this breed’s silky coat texture makes it a very low care cat. Combing through your cat’s hair weekly to remove stray hairs or debris is all that is necessary to keep his coat looking fantastic. One thing you may want to keep in mind is that although most longhairs are prone to hairballs, these cats rarely develop them.

If you want a sweet tempered, family oriented cat, then the big Ragdoll may be the ideal breed for you.
